First Time Renting a Dance Studio? Here's What to Expect

By SpaceFinder HK·7 April 2026·6 min read

Your First Dance Studio Session

If you have never rented a dance studio before, the whole process might feel mysterious. How do you get in? What do you bring? What if someone else is there? Relax — studio rental in Hong Kong is straightforward, and this guide will prepare you for a smooth first experience.

Before You Go: What to Bring

  • Clean indoor shoes or dance shoes — This is the number one rule. Never wear your outdoor shoes on the dance floor. Bring a separate pair to change into.
  • Comfortable clothing — Whatever you can move freely in. Athletic wear is fine.
  • Water bottle — Most studios do not provide water. Some have dispensers or fridges, but do not count on it.
  • Phone and charger — For music. Download your playlist beforehand in case the WiFi is slow.
  • Towel — You will sweat. A small towel keeps the floor clean too.
  • Portable speaker (backup) — Most studios provide one, but having a backup prevents surprises.

Getting In: Self-Service vs Staffed Studios

Self-Service Studios

The majority of studios in Hong Kong, especially budget and 24-hour options, are self-service. Here is how it works:

  • After payment is confirmed, the studio sends you a door code or smart lock instructions via WhatsApp.
  • You arrive at the building, take the lift to the correct floor, and enter the code at the studio door.
  • The studio is yours — no staff present. Set up your music and start dancing.
  • When your time is up, turn off the lights and AC, and leave. The door locks automatically.

Studios like Training Time Studio, Loft Studio HK, Dopamine Studio, and Perfect Unit all operate this way.

Staffed Studios

Larger studios like CrossLab, SDZ Studio, and The Yard may have staff who greet you, show you the room, and explain the equipment. This can be more comfortable for first-timers.

Inside the Studio: What to Expect

  • The room is empty. Dance studios are intentionally bare — just mirrors, floor, and a speaker. That is normal.
  • Change your shoes at the door. There may be a shoe rack or designated area. Leave outdoor shoes there.
  • Connect to the speaker. Turn on the Bluetooth speaker (usually has a power button) and pair your phone. Or find the AUX cable.
  • Adjust the lights. Many studios have light switches or remotes for different modes.
  • Set the AC temperature. Studios can get hot fast once you start moving. Set it to 20-22C before you warm up.

Common First-Timer Worries

  • "Will other people see me?" — No. You are renting a private room. The door is closed. Nobody is watching.
  • "What if I cannot connect to the speaker?" — Most Bluetooth speakers are simple to pair. If it fails, use your phone speaker as a backup. It is not ideal, but it works for practice.
  • "What if I go over time?" — Set a phone alarm for 5 minutes before your booking ends. Start packing up when it goes off.
  • "Is it safe to go to an industrial building alone?" — Yes. These buildings are well-used with multiple tenants and CCTV. Many studios are in buildings with 24-hour security guards.
  • "Do I need to know how to dance?" — No. Many people rent studios to learn from YouTube tutorials, practise casual choreography, or just move for fun.
